The History of Veterans Day

Veterans Day is an annual federal holiday honoring all men and women for their service in the United States military during times of war. That includes Army, Air Force, Coast Guard, Marine Corps, Navy, and Space Force veterans.

Veterans Day has been intended to honor American veterans of all wars ever since President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed legislation in 1954 declaring November 11 a legal holiday. Before that time, Veterans Day was called Armistice Day, as it commemorated the end of World War I.

According to History, the subsequent development occurred in 1968, when Congress passed the Uniform Holiday Act allowing Federal employees to have a three-day holiday weekend by celebrating Veterans Day on a Monday. That caused confusion, so in 1975, President Gerald Ford signed a new law returning the holiday’s annual observance to November 11.

This year, Veterans Day falls on a Thursday, with many people saluting current and former military personnel by either attending or viewing a Veterans Day event like the annual National Veterans Day Observance hosted virtually by the Department of Veterans Affairs at 11:00 am on November 11 at the Arlington National Cemetery.
