Drawing inspiration from Mother’s Day, created in 1908, Father’s Day celebrations began two years later in 1910. The day gained recognition throughout the years, culminating in 1972 when it became an official national holiday, which falls annually on the third Sunday of June. This year, Father’s Day occurs on Sunday, June 20.

Today, the National Retail Federation (NRF) estimates that Father’s Day spending will hit $20.1 billion, surpassing last year’s record expenditure by $3.1 billion. According to the NRF, that translates to about $174.10 per person. Consumers plan to spend more on cool tech and special outings, such as taking the father figures in their lives to a Thai restaurant in California’s North County.
